Michigan Tech Enterprise Corporation SmartZone (MTECSZ) seeks a Program Director for their Advanced Materials & Manufacturing (AMMP) Accelerator Program in Houghton, Michigan. In this role, you will have the opportunity to lead a dynamic program that accelerates the growth of groundbreaking startups.
AMMP is an accelerator program hosted by the MTEC SmartZone, which focuses on supporting early-stage companies involved in advanced materials and manufacturing sectors. The AMMP Accelerator provides intensive programming, mentorship, and access to investors, aiming to help these companies advance along the commercialization pathway and contribute to economic growth in the Upper Midwest.
WHAT WE OFFER.
- $90,000 annually based on the knowledge and experience you bring to the position.

WHAT YOU WILL DO.
- Lead with Vision. Take charge of developing and executing program strategies and objectives to ensure our curriculum remains at the forefront of industry trends. You’ll be responsible for the seamless operation of the program, making sure everything runs on schedule and within budget. This includes overseeing day-to-day activities, managing compliance with grant requirements, and leading a team of co-directors and collaborators. Additionally, you’ll have the opportunity to present on key topics in entrepreneurship and business development, sharing your insights and expertise with our cohort companies.
- Recruit the Best. Spearhead the recruitment of 4-6 promising companies for each cohort (2 cohorts over 2 years), ensuring we attract top-tier talent to our accelerator.
- Drive Program Success. Manage daily operations, communications, and logistics. Collaborate with mentors, guest speakers, and stakeholders to provide the best learning experience.
- Network & Collaborate. Build relationships with regional and national organizations, including tech transfer offices and research universities, to attract high-potential early-stage companies in the advanced materials and advanced manufacturing sectors.
- Manage the Budget. Work closely with our VP of Operations to keep the program on budget while seeking opportunities to expand our resources and impact.
- Deliver Excellence. Ensure cohort companies are prepared to shine during our Demo Days, representing the program with distinction and are well-prepared to execute with excellence.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
- Industry Experience. You’ve successfully held mid or senior roles at an advanced materials or manufacturing company. Alternatively, you may be a thought leader, funded researcher, or a department chair in academia with significant experience.
- Entrepreneurial Spirit. You’ve led new product development in a corporation, commercialized patents from academic research, or played a senior role in launching or scaling a materials company.
- Exposure to Innovation. You’ve worked with incubators, accelerators, venture capital firms, or corporate strategic/product development teams.
- Fundraising Expertise. You have a proven track record of securing funds from various sources, including industry partners, federal and state governments (grants, etc.).
- Strong Network. You bring a robust network of contacts that can help enhance the program and its curriculum.
- Leadership Skills. You are an exceptional leader with a passion for the role, capable of communicating a clear vision, setting direction, and inspiring, motivating, and mentoring others.
