Lightkeepers International LLC is seeking an organized, energetic Gym Manager to oversee daily gym operations, manage sports teams and activities, and supervise counselors/instructors in our after-school and camp programs across NYC.

Position: Independent Contractor – Gym Manager
Ages Served: PreK–6th grade
Schedule: After-school hours (approx. 2:00–6:00 pm) and seasonal camp days; days and sites vary
Locations: School and camp sites in New York City (multiple boroughs)

About the Role
The Gym Manager is responsible for running a safe, structured, and fun sports environment. You’ll coordinate basketball, soccer, and other sports activities, ensure counselors properly deliver their classes, manage schedules and equipment, and maintain a positive, inclusive atmosphere for all students.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee daily gym operations during after-school and camp hours, ensuring spaces are clean, safe, and ready for scheduled activities.

Plan and manage the sports schedule, including gym reservations, practice/game times, and special events or tournaments.

Supervise and support counselors/coaches, ensuring they arrive on time, follow lesson plans, and properly run their assigned classes and activities.

Manage sports teams and activities, including organizing basketball and soccer teams, forming age-appropriate groups, tracking rosters, and ensuring fair play and positive sportsmanship.

Provide training and guidance to counselors on behavior management, safety procedures, and activity delivery so classes are engaging, inclusive, and aligned with program goals.

Monitor program quality, regularly observing classes, giving feedback, and stepping in when classes are not being run according to expectations.

Ensure safety and behavior standards, enforcing rules in the gym, responding to incidents, documenting issues, and communicating concerns to site leadership.

Coordinate equipment and supplies, making sure balls, cones, pinnies, and other materials are available, organized, and in good condition; report repair or replacement needs.

Communicate with site leadership about scheduling changes, staffing needs, behavior issues, and any operational challenges in the gym.​

Build a positive culture, modeling professionalism, teamwork, and respect, and helping create a welcoming, structured environment for all students.

Required Qualifications

Demonstrated experience managing gym operations, sports programs, or coordinating youth athletics in after-school, camp, or community settings.

Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to train, support, and hold staff accountable.

Experience organizing team sports (basketball, soccer, etc.) for children PreK–6th grade.

Excellent organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Reliable, punctual, and comfortable working as an independent contractor.

Ability to manage multiple activities, staff, and schedules simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

Coaching certifications or prior experience as a sports coordinator, athletic director, or program manager.

CPR/First Aid certification.

Experience in schools, YMCAs, community centers, or nonprofit youth programs.

Bilingual candidates strongly encouraged to apply.

Contract Details

Status: 1099 Independent Contractor.

Compensation: Competitive hourly rate, commensurate with experience.

Work is contingent on site needs, enrollment, and performance.
